Dr. Hitefiled Political Science Reflection
It is interesting that for our presidential elections that it is not about who is the most popular person and who gets the most votes. But there is a lot of elections that are not as high up that usually have the most popular or most voted person win. I didn't realize that political science was so healthy focused on human behavior and human reasoning. Usually, you think it's more about the politics of what they say and more like the after math of the politics, but it is interesting that it is more about human behavior more or less. It is also interesting that 90% of winners in elections raise the most money which probably has to do with human behavior with how that relates to the marketing and promotion of each candidate and ani marketing for the other candidates.
A lot of political science is really interesting how it relates so closely to data scientist. Such as converting everything into a binary number one or zero or just how the data is like every scenario of a candidate past present or future and how the events in their life become data points which then relates to how people view them before and can shape and even in a way know an outcome of an election just based on statistics from past elections. It is interesting that it better to ask for money as statistically you win more but it makes scene in a way because when you vote and your money in on the line, so it becomes more worth your vote and impactful if it goes bad.
It's really hard to keep political data of the elections in the past so it is very difficult to understand past events and past stats to be able to predict future elections or turnouts. It is interesting how we have now realized many years later just how creative these poll booths were on voter fraud, meaning it could be very plausible now that we experience voter fraud in a different way that we cannot understand yet and possibly will look back to events from today and realize how much voter fraud there was similar to past elections.
It's good to hear the importance of interdisciplinary data and disciplines and this is the focus of Whitworth being a liberal arts university. Some of the best ways to understand if surveys are valid or not is to look back at the code book before creating the surveys. For studies it will be good to look at the data analysis and how variables are created and possible things that are being overlooked. Best ways to determine good data are yes look at the source but reverse engineer and dig deeper going back into the studies to see how they were done.
It interesting that basically everything with a quality and a large enough sample that anything can be predicted about human behavior meaning that with enough data we can determine anything and any actions regarding to any sort of behavior but in this case any which way persons will vote which could be bad later on like what if we get enough data beforehand of the population that we don't even need elections it will just be already pre-determined by data and this could be for other things that basically we won't change our opinions after more data has come out. I think I am just a bit skeptical on that because as we know there is many things events that happen in our lives are statically impossible and anomalies, yet they happen often.
It is interesting that states shift state capitals over time to be in the densest population to be able to represent the whole state before this I had thought that it was something that was just pre-determined and will always be the state capital. Which is interesting because our government wants to represent the entire population yet the capitals in only in the densest areas over time. So really, we are represented in a way by the most populus areas of each state and not a representation of the whole state and its people.
With the new data collections and the new buying methods in helps you know how to approach people and how to create surveys just being able to communicate opposing ideas ethically and morally correct to be able to convince people in a right way that doesn't lie to them but to shows them why they should vote a certain way based on who they are. It is interesting that in rank choice voting could be an alternative to help support a more diverse election and if implemented theoretically help overall satisfaction of winners of election, but the problem is this would be very difficult to implement because this could impact in a negative way for people already there meaning they will not do this simply for the benefit of the people because they will lose power. A lot of data and studies we have to realize that we are studying each other humans and we should have more thought and have more empathy towards the people and how the data is collected but more importantly to never change the data based on these events.
